Rosalinda BarraganPresidential Perspective 2017-2018 #2

Dear ISPA Members,

It has been a fun and eventful Fall, thus far.  In September, I had the privilege to introduce keynote speaker, Rachel Losoff, at the Intern/Supervisor Workshop in Normal, IL and co-presented with Gabriela Garibay (one of our ISPA chairs of the Child and Professional Diversity Committee) on Best Practices for ELs at one of the breakout sessions.  In October, we completed a successful Fall Conference in Schaumburg (5th and 6th).  I would like to personally thank our presenters: Robert Dixon, Dr. Pamela Fenning, Dr. Dan Florell, Kylie Kosmacek, Dr. Samuel Ortiz and Dr. Kathy Pluymert.  We received many positive evaluations about the topics of workshop sessions.  With my focus to be approachable and visible, ISPA Leadership hosted a networking event on Thursday after the conference as an opportunity to meet and greet our stellar team.  On Friday morning, Carrie Emrikson (Past-President), Daphne Perry (President-Elect), and I had a station to greet attendees as they entered their workshops.  Our next social gathering will be during our Winter Convention in Springfield.  Stay tuned for details!

In alignment with my theme Leading Lasting Change and focusing on opportunities to make a difference, I, along with other ISPA members, volunteered at the Chicago Marathon on October 8th.  I ran the Chicago Marathon last year but unfortunately did not have the time to train for this year.  However, I still felt like a part of the running community as we were able to see the runners at the finish line and give them their cold beer.  The runners were so grateful and told us several times that we were the best!  I would like to congratulate Gabriela Garibay on the completion of her first marathon!

School Psychology Awareness Week is November 13-17th. To uphold ISPA's theme this year,we are teaming with the American Red Cross to help families and children affected by recent natural disasters. Our goal is to raise $5,000.  The total amount raised will be announced at the  Winter Convention!  There will be prizes for those who raise the most money.

Please help support our cause:

While ISPA is launching this Charity Drive, I want you to embark on a service project that you are passionate about.  It is hard to believe we are approaching the holiday season.  This is the perfect time to give back and help others.

Lastly, I would like to take the time to thank our lobbyist, Dick Lockhart, who will retire at the end of this year.  On behalf of ISPA, we thank Dick for all of his years of advocacy and service.  We wish him a happy retirement.  And, we welcome John Carr, our new lobbyist.  We look forward to working together.
